The design looks to be more premium with a metal frame along the side binding together two panes of glass. This phone is a bargain for phablet lovers. View All 6 Photos in Gallery. The best budget phablet you can buy By Lynn La Reviewed: The device measures 6.

Although some photos taken with the megapixel were overexposed, and it took a few beats for the camera to ready itself for another shot after I pressed the shutter, images for the most part were clear, in-focus and had colors that were true-to-life.

For more details on photo quality, click on each picture below to see them at their full resolution. Video quality was also solid. Both moving and still objects were easy to make out and colors were accurate.

The camera adjusted quickly to varying lighting situations, and nearby and distant audio picked up well. Better cameras, faster performance and new AR apps. And this one still has the home button. The best budget phablet you can buy By Lynn La Reviewed: Compare These Samsung Galaxy Note 8.

Review Sections Review Specifications. A set of capacitive buttons run along the bottom of the front. The back features a unique dual camera setup more on that later , and a dark blue body that sparkles like a Twilight vampire in the sun.

The Max 2 also supports dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4. Call quality leaves something to be desired. Transmissions are generally audible, but voices have a harsh edge to them and there are occasional skips.

Noise cancellation is acceptable, but car horns and other loud background noise can still break through. The Max 2 supports Dolby Digital Plus sound enhancement for headphones. I tested with a pair of standard earphones and used Gaming mode while playing GTA: San Andreas and Music mode while listening to Spotify.

Processor and Battery The Max 2 has a capable Snapdragon processor clocked at 1. It far outstrips both the Snapdragon powered Idol 3 28, and the Snapdragon powered Stylo 2 26, In terms of real-life performance, the Max 2 handles day to day applications smoothly, launching apps and multitasking without any significant instances of lag.

Gaming is equally good; Asphalt 8 and GTA: San Andreas run fast and look good on the super-sized screen. Battery life is solid, especially taking into account the 6-inch display. The Max 2 clocked 5 hours and 30 minutes in our rundown test, in which we set screen brightness to maximum and stream full-screen video over LTE.

The phone supports Quick Charge 2. Outside of the several preloaded resource-light games, the Max 2 can struggle a bit with its ageing Adreno GPU. Although demanding titles like Asphalt 8 are still very playable, they can take some extra time to load and may exhibit some minor frame drops during gameplay.

Call quality seemed to be excellent during my time with the Max 2 on the Cricket network. It sadly lacks a fingerprint reader. There is a Hi-Fi audio chipset on board as well, which will appeal to those wishing to use headphones.

With that said, I never worried about having to charge the Max 2 before my day was over, and some users may be able to achieve two full days of light use. ZTE has made a very interesting move by including a dual-camera setup on the rear of the Grand X Max 2.

Unfortunately, this feature did not work well at all in my testing, and I see no other use for the secondary camera beyond as a marketing tool. Its 13 MP camera appeared to be promising when first glancing at the spec sheet, but after taking a look at the photos, I am very disappointed.

Firstly, many of the images that I took are noisy and distorted, something that is generally not expected in the well-lit environments that I was in. The images are also very soft, especially near the corners.

The processing is incredibly inconsistent, with some images appearing over sharpened, with others appearing under sharpened. Low-light performance was also not so great. It seems that the camera here is just not where it should be relative to the competition.

And aside from its wide-angle front-facing camera, nothing about it stood out. I especially liked its capable cameras yes, both front and back and responsive 6-inch display. Most importantly, however, this sturdy phone comes at a terrific cost: This time, however, it has an HD display that is bright and easy to view under sunlight.

With a close eye, you can still see some aliasing with images and texts, but for the most part, the display is sharp, responsive, and has a wide viewing angle. The device measures 6. Given my petite grip, I found it difficult to maneuver with one hand, and uncomfortable to hold.

Especially since its front and back surfaces are completely flat with no curvature, and its right and left edges run completely straight. In addition, its back panel is smooth and glossy.

Though I thought this detail lent a subtle element of luxury, it also makes it slick to hold. Despite its larger form factor, the Grand X Max 2 feels quite nice in the hand. It seems that the phone doubles as a fingerprint magnet at times, but this is nearly inevitable with either a plastic or glass rear.

Although plastic is generally more durable than glass, we noticed many scratches on our Max 2 review unit after only a week of use. Our unit also suffered from an approximately one meter drop onto concrete, and, although the plastic rear fared well, the side band was easily chipped in several locations.

Build quality seems about average for the price, so you may want to consider also purchasing a case, as accidents do happen. This is a great setting to have, and the confusion associated with the indeterminately labeled buttons wears off surprisingly quickly.

Now if only every smartphone manufacturer gave users this option…. While the Max 2 seemed small to me at first after coming from the 6. It has great color reproduction, very good contrast, just the right amount of saturation, and is reasonably readable outdoors.

Day-to-day performance is still quite good too, and the phone rarely had any UI hiccups during my testing. Outside of the several preloaded resource-light games, the Max 2 can struggle a bit with its ageing Adreno GPU.

The phone supports Quick Charge 2. Camera The phone has a unique dual-camera setup, boasting a primary megapixel sensor with a secondary 2-megapixel sensor underneath. The twin lenses are supposed to add increased depth and sharpness to pictures, but as far as I can tell, it performs like an average midrange and not much different from the Idol 3.

Generally, pictures outdoors are crisp, with minimal noise and grain. That said, performance can be inconsistent. The camera sometimes oversaturates colors when pictures are taken under bright lighting conditions and slightly washes out the background.

Other times the autofocus fails to lock, resulting in muddiness and blur.

Instead of an aluminum unibody however, the Max 2 is composed of a glossy plastic rear cover fixed to a plastic band with a number of clips. Overall, the phone looks very nice with its blue color scheme and subtle pattern on the rear.

On the left of the phone is a volume rocker, and up top you have a 3. The back sports a subtle striped pattern and houses a megapixel camera and its flash, as well as a small slit for the audio speaker at the bottom right corner.

Baked-in task management apps include native browser and email clients, a calendar, a calculator, a notepad, a clock with alarm and stopwatch functions, video and music players, a sound recorder and a voice dialer. Cricket threw in some of its preloaded apps, too.

Other third-party apps include TouchPal X, which activates an optional keyboard and text-inserting function; Amazon Kindle; AccuWeather; the mobile office suite KingSoft Offices; and AskMD, a medical reference and health consulting app.

The Grand X Max 2 stuffs a big 3, mAh battery into its frame, and it consistently delivered a full day of use over a week of testing. The Grand X Max 2 easily pushed from breakfast to bedtime, and often had power to spare.

I was sure to activate all the radios, and I set the screen brightness to "auto" most of the time. The phone handled hours of YouTube videos like a champ. The phone includes the system-level battery saver tool.

You can turn it on manually or set it to come on automatically when the battery reaches a predetermined percentage. It cools down the processor, dampens screen brightness, and chills out the notifications. I doubt many people will need it.

ZTE included Quick Charge 2. I was able to pair and connect the X Max 2 to a wide variety of other Bluetooth devices. It worked with headsets, speakers, and cars without problem, and also managed to connect to other phones and PCs without issue.

Phone calls with standard, mono headsets sounded good, but just short of excellent. Volume was the biggest issue. The phone was generally able to locate me within a few seconds, and accuracy was as good as about 25 feet.

When used as a navigation device it performed quickly and kept up with my real-time position as I drove around town. The phone boasts a 6-inch full HD display protected by Gorilla Glass 3. This beast of a smartphone offers a whopping 6-inch screen, all-day battery life, and a compelling software experience.

This phone is a bargain for phablet lovers. Some smart design and material choices help the Grand X 3 look and feel like a much more costly device than it really is. This phone is well made, but offers middling specs and performance.
