That said, the screen still looks quite good for everyday tasks including watching videos and playing games, with the large screen allowing for a fantastic media experience. The phone may need a bit more power when playing games or using intense apps, but for most casual tasks it will do great. Want to catch all the details? It looks basically identical to the Grand X Max 2 that came out last year, except in place of the dual camera sensors you have a fingerprint scanner. The twin lenses are supposed to add increased depth and sharpness to pictures, but as far as I can tell, it performs like an average midrange and not much different from the Idol 3. The 5-megapixel front-facing sensor performs adequately in good but looks muddy in darker settings.

It is fast and only failed to recognize my fingerprint a couple times. While most budget phones strip the phone of all cool features, the ZTE Grand X 4 is skimping out on very little. Also packed inside is 16 GB of internal flash storage.

The only significant feature missing is NFC, really, but we know not many of you care for that anyways. In good ZTE fashion, the software is pretty much stock Android with some slight yet helpful additions. The most obvious difference will be on the notification area, which does look rather unique.

Pulling down the notification area will display your notifications of course brightness options and 4 toggles you can customize to your liking. These can also be edited, by the way. It is a simple interface, which we know is something the US market loves.

The closer to stock Android, the better, right? Cameras on low-end phones tend to be horrible, a trend ZTE has been wanting to change. Now, I am not saying this is a phenomenal camera phone, but it can take some decent shots.

I was especially surprised by the manual mode in the included app. One can easily tinker with the ISO, shutter speed, exposure, white balance and more. In addition, one can separately select which area of the frame it would be better to focus on, while exposure is captured from another.

Simply move the circle and cross wherever you prefer. Here are some samples of the images I captured. Of course, you can find all those cool modes. These include panorama, multi exposure and interval shooting.

I have always said there is one huge benefit to a phone with lesser specs — battery life. This thing will last! Couple this with the fact that the ZTE Grand X 4 has a pretty hefty battery and you have yourself one long battery life.

The phone may need a bit more power when playing games or using intense apps, but for most casual tasks it will do great. It could also use a higher definition screen, but you are still getting much more than what you paid for. The device comes with some features usually reserved only for higher-end phones, such as a fingerprint reader and USB Type-C, so you are not missing out on all the fun.

In addition, you get amazing battery life, a pretty good camera considering the price range , a solid construction, pleasing design and good build quality. Oh, and there is one more factor — can you live with Cricket Wireless?

Not to mention you do get unlimited data; you only get a limited amount of high speed data, though. The main question I ask myself when making a review is — could I live with this phone? I would certainly recommend it to a casual user, though.

Mediocre camera Unwieldy in the hand Weak sounding speaker. There is no shortage of mid-range, budget-friendly smartphones in the Android world, but the options do start to get somewhat limited when it comes to ultra-large smartphones in this price range.

Things are quite simple and straightforward in terms of design, with ZTE not aiming for anything too flashy with this device. The front and back panels are made of glass, which can be a fingerprint magnet, with the latter featuring a carbon fiber pattern that gives the phone a little bit of flair.

Holding it all together is a plastic frame, with the top and bottom portions of the phone being slightly more rounded than the rest. As such, the device is quite unwieldy in the hand, not helped by the thick bezels, sharp corners, and relatively flat profile.

The headphone jack and the microUSB port are placed at the top and bottom respectively. Up front is a notification LED located next to the front-facing camera, along with the earpiece and usual sensors.

That said, the screen still looks quite good for everyday tasks including watching videos and playing games, with the large screen allowing for a fantastic media experience. Color saturation, brightness, outdoor visibility, and viewing angles are all good, with very little color shifting, making this a very enjoyable display all around.

Things continue to remain decidedly mid-range on the hardware side of things as well. Navigating around the elements of the user interface, opening and closing applications, and multi-tasking are all admirably handled by the device, and most games, including first person shooters and 3D racing games like Asphalt 8 also ran smoothly without much of a hiccup.

There is a single speaker located on the back of the phone, denoted by a tiny slit in the glass. Apart from the poor placement of the speaker, resulting in it being muffled very easily when laying the phone down on a flat surface, the speaker volume itself is fairly low, making it difficult to hear anything save for in the quietest of environments.

Inside is a very large 3, mah battery, that with basic usage like texting, checking in on social networks, and light web browsing, keeps the phone running for as long as two days, with 5 hours of screen-on time.

The front-facing camera not only allows for some great looking self-portraits, but also the ability to easily fit a lot into the frame. The camera application includes three different shooting modes to cater to a variety of users.

For the regular everyday casual picture taker, the automatic mode helps keep things simple, with modes like HDR and a short list of general camera settings available on the left side. Taping on the viewfinder will adjust the point of focus, but exposure is fixed based on the scenery.

For the more advanced user, the PRO mode allows for manual control over white balance, ISO, and exposure, and introduces other elements onto the screen like a horizon leveler and a camera grid.

When it came to running all my apps, for the most part, it handled everything I threw at it without any major issues. I was not able to run Shadowgun, and Real Racing had plenty of stutters.

More casual games worked just fine, though. The UI of course is super responsive. Remember when cheap phones took like 3 seconds just to go from homepage to homepage? Those days are long gone! While most phones in this price range strip the phone of all cool features in existence, it seems the ZTE Grand X 4 is skimping out on very little.

For starters, the phone does come with a fingerprint reader, as previously mentioned. And a very good one, at that. It is fast and only failed to recognize my fingerprint a couple times.
